DIY Tattoo Paper Printed Terrazzo Planter

filed under

Last week I shared this DIY terrazzo planter that I made using vinyl, but I promised that I had an even more awesome way to make a terrazzo planter using some unique supply. And you can see by the title what that is. Tattoo paper! Yep! I used temporary tattoo paper that you can print at home to create my DIY Tattoo Paper Printed Terrazzo Planter. While it may seem strange to put tattoo paper on a ceramic planter, the effect is amazingly awesome. Since the tattoo paper is a very thin colored piece, it blends almost seemlessly with the ceramic and makes it look like the terrazzo pattern was actually part of the planter to begin with! And while the pictures are cute and all, this is one of those projects that really looks so much more high end and amazing in person. So I realy encourage you to give it a try!

The process is really quite simple. Begin by printing your pattern (or really just strips of color that you want your planter to feature) on the tattoo paper following the directions on the package. Next, apply the adhesive sheet that comes in the tattoo paper package to the top of your printed tatttoo paper.

Next, use your scissors to cut out small irregular shapes of each color from the tattoo paper. Remove the plastic coating and apply face down onto your planter. Use a damp sponge or wet paper towel to apply the temporary tattoo to the planter.

Now, just repeat this process all over the planter using different sizes and colors of “terrazzo” pieces.

Once you have finished adding your pieces and the pattern is how you like it. Let the ceramic dry if it got damp during the application process, then give it a coat of decoupage glue. Let dry fully (I let it dry overnight), and then add a second coat. This will keep the tattoo paper in place and prevent it from getting dirty or rubbing off. Once the glue is dry, fill the bowl with dirt, plants, and rocks. Or if you want, you can just use it to hold fruit or candy on your counter too. Since the bowl I used was unfinished ceramic, I don’t want to use it to hold food. I am also not sure how the decoupage glue would hold up to frequent washing, but I am tempted to try this technique on some cereal bowls. Because honestly, this DIY tattoo paper printed terrazzo planter is one of my favorite things ever and I want to add this pattern to all my dishes!
