Back to (Bedroom) Basics

A collection of Erin’s all time favorite bedroom spaces, and how they’re inspiring the changes happening in our own bedroom.

It’s the end of quarantine week 2, and I’ve been attempting to get this post done since the beginning of week 1! So pressing ‘Publish’ on this tonight is a big victory! I hope you and your family are staying healthy and sane amidst the crazy.

Call it cabin fever or perhaps a therapeutic need to regularly rethink how our space works for us? Either way, we’re starting to refresh our bedroom for summer so here’s a look at the changes we’ve made so far and some visual inspiration as to where we’re headed!

If you’re following along on Instagram, you know we painted our dark green bedroom wall back to white. The reaction has been split–some of you loooved the dark green and others like the fresh white. I totally get both reactions! It was a pretty green, but it was DARK. The room is tiny to begin with, and it faces North. Basically all strikes against it for have any hope of feeling spacious, light, airy.

Catch up on Instagram highlights for a closer look at the bedroom and insight into where we’re headed.

Rewind 2.5 years:

Painting this wall green was our first project back in the saddle after Sylvia was born 2.5 years ago. We had an editor coming over to tour our house for editorial publications, and I think I was sucked into the dark green paint color trend, wanted a change, and liked the contrast at the time. So we left it, and 2.5 yrs later, it’s Spring and I’m ready to move on from the dark green and get back-to-basics in here.

What I mean by back-to-basics is, I’ve been doing some major sole searching as to what I really love–have always loved, and trying to tap into my personal style, while blocking out what’s trending. It’s HARD to do, you guys!

The inspiration photos in this post are ones I’ve had pinned for years. They’re actually some of the first pins I ever pinned on Pinterest almost 7 years ago. I look at these images now, and I love them more than the day I first discovered them. And that tells me I’m on to something–I’m honing in on my style!

Some elements I’ll be weaving into our bedroom are:

  • Spindle/bobbin style furniture
  • Antique crystal lighting
  • Heritage quilts/patterns
  • Crisp white
  • Clean/modern lines
  • Classic blue
  • Stripes
  • Murano glass

So many of the changes we plan to make in the room are swaps we already have around our house. The “new” elements are linen-esque drapery, an old spindle side table from Craigslist, a chandelier from Facebook Marketplace and a wool/jute area rug.

Anywho, you may find the changes in here completely boring, as they won’t be in-your-face design moves or a shock value before & after. But, they’ll be what I truly love! And I’ll put stock in that any day!

THIS! 100%. We’ve been back in our house almost a year now and so many finishing details in every room are staring me down. It can be overwhelming, some days I think I’ll just tell people I’m really inspired by the minimalism of Axel VerVoordt 😂. Can’t wait to see what you do! It will be beautiful.

I hear you! It’s hard to make decisions just for the sake of making decisions–when you don’t feel inspired. I say, don’t rush it! Plus, Axel VerVoordt is always chic in my book!
