Beginner Hooded Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern- an essential for the nursery in the prettiest self-striping yarn!

What’s better than a blanket? One with a hood, of course! This hooded baby blanket is a breeze to knit. It’s knit on a diagonal using a basic garter stitch. At the beginning of each row, you yarn over (YO) to increase a stitch. After you have 175 stitches, you begin the decrease. The hood is knit separately and then sewn on.

I used Lion Brand Mandala for this project. It comes in a wide array of fun colors. The super-long self striping makes it perfect for blankets!

(Note- How to make a yarn over (YO): To make a yarn over, you simply bring the knitting yarn (the “over” strand) over the needle between two existing stitches on one row, and then work that strand as a stitch when you work your way back to it in the next row.)

Beginner Hooded Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern

Yarn: Lion Brand Mandala in Spirit (2 skeins)

Needles: Size US 6 single point

(I like to start off on single point needles and then switch over circular needles [not joined] when I have approximately 50-60 stitches on the needle)

Gauge: Not important

For the blanket:

Cast on 3 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit
Row 2: K2, yo, k to end of row (4 sts)
Repeat Row 2 until there are 175 sts on your needle.

Next Row (Decrease row): K1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k to end of row – (174 sts)
Repeat last row until 5 sts remain.
Last Row: K1, k2tog, k2tog.
Bind off.

For the hood:

Cast on and work same as blanket until the straight edge of hood measures approximately 11
in.
Knit 2 rows, then bind off.
