Learn how to make bubblegum essential oil! This fun, candy-scented essential oil blend recreates the classic aroma of pink bubblegum with a special blend of oils. Skip the synthetic bubblegum fragrance oil and make this fun candy EO blend instead.

Bubblegum essential oil

The smell of bubblegum reminds me of a simpler time. As a kid, I loved my favorite bubblegum lip balm, and there was a bubblegum body spray I was pretty fond of, too.

It’s not exactly my signature fragrance anymore, but I still enjoy bubblegum’s sweet scent. Only now, I can enjoy it the natural way, with non-toxic essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances.

So whether you’re looking for a fun new diffuser recipe, or a sweet-smelling blend for your DIY recipes, I think this bubblegum blend fits the bill!

Read on to learn how to make a homemade bubblegum essential oil blend.

I’ve included 6 different ways to make a bubblegum scent, with multiple essential oil substitutions. So no matter how small your oil collection is, you’ll be able to make a blend that smells like bubblegum.

Aside from diffusing it, you can also add your homemade blend to DIY skincare recipes or aromatherapy products – for instance, you could make a natural bubblegum scented perfume or body spray. It would also make a fun candy diffuser blend for kids, too.

What does bubblegum smell like?

Bubblegum is one of those iconic scents and flavors that’s easy to recognize, but a bit more difficult to describe.

To me, bubblegum smells sugary-sweet and fruity, with a hint of something powdery, and a smooth, creamy note that smells like banana.

This isn’t far off, because the classic pink bubblegum was meant to emulate a variety of sweet fruits. It’s the flavor we know as tutti-frutti, or “all fruits” in Italian.

Bubble gum scented essential oil blend

Specifically, the original bubblegum flavor is said to combine strawberry, banana, and cherry, and may also include notes of orange, lemon, and even a hint of cinnamon.

But there’s more than one way to make bubblegum, because another classic recipe combines pineapple, banana, wintergreen, and clove to achieve the iconic flavor (and fragrance).

So, to put it simply, bubblegum smells like a combination of sweet, fruity notes. And while there’s some variation on exactly how to achieve its aroma, the fruits play an important role.

How do you make a bubble gum scent with essential oils?

The smell of bubblegum isn’t exactly associated with any naturally occurring essential oils. And unless a brand uses natural fragrances (such as this bubblegum soap), most bubblegum scented products are inevitably scented with bubblegum fragrance oil, or artificial perfume compounds such as ethyl butyrate or isoamyl acetate.

However, with the right essential oils, you can emulate the sweet, fruity and powdery notes of real bubblegum. Best of all, you’ll also enjoy the aromatherapy benefits you won’t get from a fragrance oil.

So, how do you create a natural bubblegum scent? Unfortunately, there’s no strawberry, cherry, or banana essential oils, so those are off the table. There’s banana juice CO2 extract, but it’s very difficult to source and reserved for perfumery.

(I envy anyone who can get their hands on some – I can only imagine the decadent, banana-scented creations you can make with it. But I digress.)

That leaves us with the citrus essential oils for those fruity bubblegum and candy notes – oils such as grapefruit, tangerine, blood orange, and lemon. These definitely create a fruity scent, but citrus oils on their own aren’t enough.

So, we still need a few more essential oils to create a multidimensional bubblegum blend. And you likely already have quite a few of them in your collection.

Essential oils that smell like bubblegum

Like I mentioned in my post for gumdrop essential oil, you might be surprised at which essential oils can create candy scents, such as bubblegum and cotton candy.

Just like perfumery, blending essential oils is all about combining aroma compounds in the right quantities. And often, one drop of a particular oil can end up smelling very different when combined with other fragrances.

Essential oils that smell like bubblegum. Grapefruit, tangerine, spearmint, ylang-ylang, cassia and eucalyptus essential oil for a bubblegum scent.
Grapefruit, tangerine, spearmint, ylang-ylang, cassia, and eucalyptus essential oils can create a blend that smells like bubblegum.

One such example is eucalyptus. It smells very herbal and medicinal straight from the bottle, especially the globulus type. However, you can change its aroma drastically by mixing it with some sweet-smelling essential oils, such as ylang-ylang.

Eucalyptus is actually a key ingredient for some of these bubblegum essential oil blends. I never would’ve thought that eucalyptus oil could smell like candy, but it does (especially the milder eucalyptus radiata).

Ylang-ylang essential oil is another example. It has a sweet, tropical fragrance with a creamy quality, so it can smell like banana in the right blend.

In fact, ylang-ylang is integral to the bubblegum scent, because it gives you those banana and tropical fruit notes that are hard to get with other essential oils.

Ylang-ylang also smells like cotton candy – find out how to make a cotton candy scent with essential oils.

Essential oils that smell like bubblegum include:

Of course, you won’t need every single one of these oils to make a bubblegum essential oil blend. It depends on which blend you choose to make.

Ylang-ylang and grapefruit are key to making a bubblegum scent with essential oils, but the rest of the oils vary. The most complex blend contains 5 essential oils, but the simplest blend has only 3.

Like I mentioned, I wanted to provide multiple options for those who might not have certain oils in their collections. I also tried to use basic essential oils that you’re likely to have on hand.

But if you’re in the mood to try something a little more complicated, and you don’t mind buying some specialty oils for extra realistic scents (like tonka bean), you might also like my sugar cookie essential oil recipe or caramel essential oil blend.

Essential oil blends that smell like bubblegum

Below I’ve included 6 of my favourite bubblegum essential oil recipes.

There are quite a few bubblegum blends online already, but most of them use the same essential oils. So I wanted to do something different.

While I was testing these recipes, I realized there are many different ways to make a blend that smells like bubblegum. So each recipe has slightly different qualities, depending on the oils used. You may want to try more than one to see what bubblegum scent you like the best.

Bubblegum candy essential oil blend

For the fruit oils, I used both the pink grapefruit and tangerine oils that came in my recent Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Boxes.

I love this box because it’s such an easy and affordable way to expand your essential oil collection. Each box include 4 full-size essential oils, plus fun extra ingredients to make 6 non-toxic recipes. And the best part is that it won’t break the budget!

If you’d like to try a box, you can use code ALIFEADJACENTFREE to receive a $40 gift card with your first order. To learn more, see our full Simply Earth review.

One more thing: while I didn’t make these bubblegum blends specifically for kids, most of them are made with essential oils that are generally recognized as safe for children over 10 years old.

However, it’s up to you to determine which essential oils are safe for your kids. For instance, some sources do not recommend eucalyptus globulus for children under 10, but the milder eucalyptus radiata appears to be safe.

If you’re unsure, please ask a professional or consult an aromatherapy book.

Bubblegum Essential Oil Blend

12 drops grapefruit essential oil
10 drops tangerine essential oil
6 drops ylang-ylang essential oil
5 drops wintergreen essential oil (or spearmint)
1 drop cassia essential oil

This bubblegum essential oil blend is inspired by this candy flavor recipe, and it really does smell like classic bubblegum.

Something magical happens when you combine sweet mint oils like wintergreen (or spearmint) with the sweet spiciness of cassia. Together, they help create that interesting “powdery” quality of pink bubblegum.

Ylang-ylang essential oil adds a sweet and creamy note that emulates banana. Tangerine and grapefruit add those juicy fruit notes, replacing the pineapple aroma in the original recipe.

Bubblegum fragrance oil

If you don’t have tangerine, you can replace it with more grapefruit oil. But you can also experiment with other citrus oils. For instance, blood orange creates a more tropical fragrance, like tropical bubblegum. You can also use sweet orange for a sweeter aroma.

Wintergreen oil is very high in methyl salicylate and not safe for young children, so you can also use spearmint essential oil as a substitute. Either one works to create a bubblegum scent, but wintergreen is a bit more realistic.

One more thing: you need quite a few other oils to cover up 1 drop of overpowering cassia oil. So that’s why this recipe calls for such a large quantity.

Pink Bubblegum Essential Oil Blend

10 drops ylang-ylang essential oil
4 drops grapefruit essential oil
1 drop eucalyptus radiata essential oil

This pink bubblegum blend was inspired by this bubblegum scented soap, so I can’t take credit for this particular blend of oils.

But I also realized this bubblegum combination has been floating around online for years. I’m not sure who came up with it first, as the same recipe appears in many different places (including all over Pinterest).

However, I came up with my own recipe using different ratios. I didn’t want to repeat the same recipe as everyone else. And in my humble opinion, a true bubblegum fragrance needs a lot more ylang-ylang than the other recipes call for!

If you want to make your home smell like bubblegum, this one makes a great bubblegum diffuser blend, too.

Pink bubblegum fragrance oil

Eucalyptus radiata is the key here. It’s sharp, but it has a slightly sweeter and less medicinal scent than eucalyptus globulus. I won’t pretend to know exactly which aroma compounds make the magic happen, but one drop is all you need for a bubblegum aroma.

This may also be a good bubblegum essential oil blend for kids, as grapefruit, ylang-ylang and eucalyptus radiata are generally recognized as safe for children over 10.

Adding benzoin makes this recipe smell even more like realistic bubblegum. So if you have benzoin in your collection, try the gumball blend below.

Simple Bubblegum Essential Oil Blend

10 drops ylang-ylang essential oil
4 drops grapefruit essential oil
1 drop eucalyptus globulus essential oil

Eucalyptus radiata isn’t as common as eucalyptus globulus, so if you don’t have it in your collection, you can also use eucalyptus globulus to make a bubblegum blend.

I prefer the one with eucalyptus radiata, but this one has a nice powdery quality, like real bubblegum. It’s up to your personal preference. I never would’ve thought eucalyptus oil could smell like candy until I tried this blend.

Gumball Essential Oil Blend

8 drops ylang-ylang essential oil
6 drops benzoin resin
4 drops grapefruit essential oil
1 drop eucalyptus essential oil

If you like really sweet-smelling essential oil blends, I think this is the bubblegum blend for you. And if you want to smell like bubblegum, it’s perfect for making a bubblegum perfume, too.

Benzoin resin is key for this one. Benzoin already smells a lot like candy straight from the bottle, so it adds an extra punch of sugary sweetness and realism.

Kids will likely love this sweet blend, but please keep in mind benzoin is not recommended for children under 10.

For more ways to use benzoin, you might also like my grape gumdrop blend, or my sugarplum perfume that smells like candy.

You can use either variety of eucalyptus for this blend, or you can also substitute balsam fir.

Sweet Bubblegum Essential Oil Blend

12 drops ylang ylang essential oil
5 drops grapefruit essential oil
1 drop balsam fir essential oil

I wanted to find another oil that could replace eucalyptus in a bubblegum fragrance, and balsam fir worked too. So hopefully you’ll have at least one of these oils in your collection.

This one is another good bubblegum diffuser blend. It’s sweeter and less powdery than the eucalyptus blends. So, you might prefer it to the pink bubblegum blend if you don’t like eucalyptus.

Give this one a try if you like sweet, fruity bubblegum.

Easy Bubblegum Essential Oil Blend

10 drops ylang-ylang essential oil
4 drops grapefruit essential oil
1 drop spearmint essential oil

This easy bubblegum scented blend is simplified version of the classic bubblegum recipe. So, it’s ideal for those with small essential oil collections, and a good bubblegum diffuser recipe, too.

One drop of spearmint essential oil is all you need to transform the aromas of grapefruit and ylang-ylang into bubblegum.

Spearmint is a very sweet-smelling mint oil, which makes it perfect for blends that smell like candy. In the right blend, its minty notes fade into the background, leaving its sweet, powdery qualities at the forefront.

So, if you don’t have eucalyptus radiata or balsam fir, using spearmint is a good shortcut for creating a bubblegum scent. However, keep in mind it’s still a bit more minty than the other blends.

You can also use wintergreen essential oil as a substitute, but not around children.

How to make bubblegum essential oil

  1. Carefully dispense each oil into your clean essential oil bottle. Feel free to double the recipe if you’d like to make more than a single use amount. That way, you can keep it on hand as a bubblegum diffuser blend.
  2. Replace the lid and swirl your bottle gently to combine the essential oils.
  3. Your bubblegum essential oil blend is finished. It’s technically ready to use or diffuse right away, but for best results, you should leave it overnight or even longer. Fragrances take time to develop, so it may not smell exactly like bubblegum immediately. The aroma compounds need time to interact with one another. This process will happen over the coming days and weeks, so your blend will smell even better with time.
  4. If desired, apply your free printable label, which you can find below.
  5. Use your homemade blend in DIY recipes such as lip balm, body spray, or bubblegum perfume if you want to smell like bubblegum. Or, you can use it as a natural bubblegum fragrance oil for room sprays or other aromatherapy products.

Tips for making bubblegum scented essential oil

  • If you’re going to use your bubblegum oil to naturally fragrance DIY bath and body recipes, please do not exceed 2% fragrance concentration. As a general rule, 2% is the maximum recommended dermal use level for many essential oils.
  • Remember to use a dark glass bottle (such as cobalt blue) for your homemade essential oil blends to protect the fragile oils from light.
  • For a bubblegum diffuser blend, I recommend making your favourite blend in a bottle first, then adding a few drops to your diffuser as desired. If you add each oil directly to your diffuser before the fragrance has had time to develop, it may not smell like bubblegum yet.
  • Please note that while this bubblegum essential oil recipe smells edible, it’s not. Please do not eat it!
