When our family decided to be Greek gods for Halloween, nobody had the heart to tell Maggie that Cupid is actually a Roman god. Eros, Cupid’s Greek counterpart, is way less known!

So yes, this is a mix of Greek and Roman, and still one of the most fun family Halloween costumes we’ve ever worn!

Together we were Cupid, Zeus, Poseidon, and Athena, and it was such a fun family costume to put together.

Other Greek God Costumes

We have a big, juicy post with DIY tutorials on how to create Henry’s Zeus costume and Ryan’s Poseidon costume. Highly recommend doing all of these together as a family or group costume!

Make an Athena Costume

The Athena costume is easy as can be! I sort of went with Athena because I had a white flowy dress in my closet that I knew would work. Otherwise, I just added a few DIY accessories!

Materials

  1. Make the crown by cutting out small leaf shapes from the gold pleather and attaching them to the headband with the glue gun. This will be worn on the back of the head, giving the impression of a laurel wreath.
  2. Pull up the front of the maxi dress and use a safety pin to pin it up, creating a cascading effect in front.
  3. Affix a piece of sheer gold fabric over one shoulder like a sash. This can be pinned or tied in place.
  4. Cut pieces of the gold pleather to serve as a belt, an arm cuff, and a wrist cuff. Add velcro to the ends of each piece to hold them around your waist, arm, and wrist.

Supplies You’ll Need for a Cupid Costume

  1. Cut out heart and leaf shapes from the gold, red, and white cardstock and glue them onto the headband. This can be worn like a crown in the front or back.
  2. Affix a sash of red fabric to one shoulder of the dress with either hot glue or a few stitches. I covered this with a gold button but it’s not necessary to do so.
  3. We used the headband from this costume around Maggie’s waist as a belt, but you could also cut a length of the gold pleather and attach it around the waist with velcro.
  4. For the bow and arrow, cut a bow shape out of cardboard and cover it with pieces of gold cardstock like we did for Henry’s Zeus thunderbolt. Cut a heart from the cardboard, and cover that with the red cardstock. Glue the heart onto the end of the wooden dowel. On the other end, cut some gold pleather to look like a feather and glue it on.
  5. Glue the arrow to the bow. Then tie some string from one end of the bow, to the feather on the arrow, to the other end of the bow. (We found that permanently attaching the bow to the arrow was better than having two pieces.)
  6. Paint some cute hearts on Cupid’s cheeks with the gold body paint.

How to Make Wings for a Cupid Costume

And now for the final touch – Cupid’s wings!

  1. Cut two wing shapes from cardboard, sized appropriately for your Cupid’s body.
  2. Glue these two wings together in the center.
  3. Cover the edges of the cardboard with white masking tape.
  4. Fold a coffee filter in half. Starting at the bottom of the wings, glue the coffee filter onto the cardboard. Repeat until one side of both wings is covered.
  5. Turn the wings over. Add the coffee filters halfway up the wings. At the top of this side, hot glue on 1″ elastic where Cupid’s shoulders will be. This will make it so that Cupid can wear her wings like a backpack.
  6. Trim the edges of all of the coffee filters so that they’re even with the cardboard shape of the wings.
