DIY Light Switch and Socket Plates

If you are a crafter, than chances are you have heard of Sculpey. They make polymer clay in all the colors of the rainbow and tons of different special finishes, but did you know that they also make liquid polymer clay? Liquid Sculpey comes in a bunch of colors, but their new emerald metallic and glow in the dark might just be my favorite! And they were just perfect for my DIY light switch and socket plates for my powder room refresh and my studio.

I used two different techniques to create these switch plates. For the sprinkle filled plate I used a silicone mold to make the new light switch cover, and for the malachite looking one, I marbled the liquid clay directly on the plastic socket plate! Let me walk you through both techniques.

Supplies to make your own DIY Light Switch and Socket Plates:

Liquid Sculpey in your choice of colors (I used Metallic Emerald and Glow in the Dark)

-Silicone switch plate mold (I found mine on amazon)

-Sculpey silicone mixing set

-Sculpey Gloss Glaze

-Light Switch plate (optional for marbling existing plates)

-Parchment paper

-Baking Tray

-Oven

Sprinkle Filled Light Switch Plate

To begin I added half a container of Glow in the Dark Liquid Sculpey to the Silicone mixing cup (the amount you need will vary depending on how much faux sprinkles or confetti you use), then added in faux clay sprinkles and used the tool included in the mixing set to mix the sprinkles in with the Liquid Sculpey. Once mixed, I poured and scooped the mixture into the silicone mold and tapped it on the counter several times to release any air bubbles.

Next, I baked the clay in the mold in an oven safe tray at 275F for 15 minutes, then removed it from the oven and let it cool. Once cool, I gave the switch plate a coat of Sculpey Gloss Glaze (this is optional but I liked the shine!). Once dry, I installed the new light switch plate in my studio. I usually edit out this light switch when photographing this wall, but now with its cute new sprinkle and glow in the dark plate, I no longer have to do that!

DIY Marbled Malachite Looking Socket Plate

For the marbled malachite looking socket plate, I used a different technique and marbled the white and Metallic Emerald Liquid Sculpey directly on the plastic switch plate. Since the Sculpey only needs a few minutes to set up and the temperature is so low, I didn’t have to worry about the plastic switch plate melting or getting too hot in the oven, but you can always do this with a metal plate instead if you prefer not to bake plastic.

First I mixed the Liquid Sculpey in the containers each color came in to make sure it was well mixed, then simply drizzled the Liquid Sculpey on the socket plate on top of parchment paper in my baking dish, then used a tooth pick to swirl the colors around together. Next I baked at 275F for 10 minutes. Once removed from the oven and cooled, I added the socket plate back to the wall in my powder room. It fits right in and looks so much better than the white plastic one that was there before don’t you think?!

I hope I inspired you to take even the most overlooked element in your home and give it a little pizzazz with the Liquid Sculpey! Which method or look is your favorite?
