French Knit Valentine’s Day Necklaces

French Knit Valentine's Day Necklaces

You could wear your heart on your sleeve as the saying goes, but why not wear it around your neck with one of these cute DIY necklaces? We love how versatile French (or tube) knitting is, so we thought that shaping them into simple hearts would make the perfect accessory for Valentine’s Day! These necklace pendants are a little bit oversized, so they’re excellent for younger kids, or can also be turned into backpack charms or brooches if you prefer. Keep reading for the step by step instructions below!

Step 1
To start off, feed the end of the yarn down the center of the spool so that the tail comes out the bottom. Use the yarn at the top of the spool to wrap around each peg once, making sure the yarn is positioned at the base of each peg. Then use the yarn to wrap around the outside of all four pegs. Each peg should now have two rows of yarn on it.

Using the needle (or a chopstick if you don’t have one) carefully lift up the lower piece of yarn on one of the pegs and pull it over the top of the peg as well as the strand of yarn above it. Repeat this process for each peg so that they now each have one strand of yarn around them.

Repeat this process, wrapping the yarn around the four pegs and pulling each bottom strand of yarn over the other. Once the rope is 1 or 2 inches long, it’s time to insert the coated wire that will help shape the heart. Cut the wire as long as you like, and try bending it into a heart shape first to make sure you’re happy with the size. Straighten the wire out and carefully insert one end into the hollow center channel of the rope. Make sure that the wire doesn’t accidentally poke through the side of the rope!

Continue French knitting around the wire, tugging on the bottom of the rope gently as you go to guide it down the spool.

Step 2
When the wire is completely covered, it’s time to finish off the rope. To do this, use the needle to lift one loop over to the neighboring peg so that one peg now has no yarn on it, and the neighboring peg has two. Lift the lower yarn strand over the peg and the other yarn so that only one strand remains on this peg. Then use the needle to move this yarn loop over to the next neighboring peg on the other side. Like before, lift the lower yarn over the top, and repeat this until there is only one loop left on one last peg. Remove the loop from the last peg and pull the yarn tightly.

Step 3
Trim the yarn tails off from both ends of the rope.

Step 4
Bend the rope into a heart shape! Use hot glue to secure the two ends together. Cut a piece of matching yarn long enough to be a necklace. Tie the two ends into a knot and then hot glue to the heart. Repeat in as many colors as you like!
