How do you make hand sanitizer Gel?

Yes, it is easier than you think to make homemade sanitizer with aloe. If you don’t like store-bought or can’t find it you can start making hand sanitizer at home. You only need a few ingredients 91% isopropyl alcohol and aloe vera gel. Add in essential oils if you like.

This is an easy project to make with kids. I have found that when you get them involved in the process they take ownership and are more likely to use. It works too for making dinner and getting them to eat veggies.

It is important to keep homemade products labeled! The active ingredient is alcohol so we want to be safe and keep it labeled especially for young children.

I have included round and square labels so they work for a variety of bottle shapes and sizes. Download the file, print on a solid sheet of sticker paper.  To keep the ink from smearing from freshly sanitized hands I covered the label with clear packing tape.  I then used a 1 3/4 inch circle punch to cut out the round labels. It is easy enough to cut the square labels with scissors.

Can I use vodka?

No, you can’t you vodka (ethyl alcohol) or other grain alcohol to make hand sanitizer. The alcohol content matters. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends your sanitizer must be at least 60 percent alcohol to be effective. Using at least 91% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) is best. Sorry, regular vodka and whiskey won’t cut it. Witch hazel will not work either

  1. Does this turn out thick because of the aloe vera gel? Because I bought rubbing alcohol in spray bottles so I could mix up the ingredients and then pour it back into the spray bottles. I see you used a squeeze bottle. I don’t want to end up with a clogged mess if I can help it. :-/

  2. Love your site! Just wondering what section of store is aloe vera gel sold?

I saw Dr. Ian do this on Rachael Ray show and his proportions were 2 parts alcohol to 1 part aloe vera gel. He said it could also be put in a spray bottle.

    Thanks!

  3. Thank You for sharing!! Your amazing!! I love what you do….I don’t know how you find the time. I saw a lot of labels, just not the hand sanitizer labels. I’m 67 and didn’t learn all of “This” in school. Thank you for the quick response.
