When making DIY candles, I always use soy wax flakes. Here are the benefits of using soy wax to make your Pumpkin Spice Latte Candle:
- Soy candles are non-toxic, natural and sustainable. If you make a candle with only soy wax and essential oils, you have an all natural candle.
- Soy candles burn 50% longer than other varieties. They also burn much more evenly so there it is little to no wax wasted stuck on the side of the jar.
- Soy candles burn cleaner than other candles, emitting about 90% less black soot than other wax candles.
- Since soy burns slower, it holds onto the scent from essential oils better since it is more gradually released.
Once I discovered that I could make DIY soy wood wick candles myself, there was no looking back on those expensive store bought varieties. Besides, when you DIY them, you can make them in whatever scents you choose.

How to Make a DIY Spiced Pumpkin Latte Soy Candle
Printable instruction card and step by step photos at the bottom of this post.
- Overfill the candle jar you will be using for your wood wick candle with soy candle wax flakes. Dump flakes in a microwave safe glass bowl. Fill the jar again about ¾ full with soy candle wax flakes and dump into the bowl with the other flakes.
- Microwave the flakes in 45 second intervals until melted, stirring well between each interval. NOTE: The bowl will be very hot when you remove it from the microwave so you will want to use pot holders.
- Add essential oil and stir thoroughly and continuously for 2 minutes to ensure that oil is fully incorporated into the soy wax.
- Place the wood wick into the metal wick holder and place wick into the middle of candle jar (you can add a bit of adhesive to the bottom of the wick holder so that it doesn’t budge in the jar).
- Carefully pour the wax into the candle jar. To prevent the wax from hardening and messing up your bowl, rinse immediately.
- For best scent results, let soy candles cure with the lid on for 1 to 2 weeks before burning. This gives the oils and the wax enough time to bond together to give you the max scent payoff. Then you can burn your wood wick candle and enjoy!
- If necessary, trim the wick to about ¼” above the candle.
