It’s hard to believe that Canada Day is just around the corner. Our July 1st celebration provides a great opportunity to kick off the summer and reflect on all it means to be Canadian. This year we’re happy to partner with Bernardin to show you how to add some red and white to your table with this fun jar painting for Canada Day craft idea.

DIY Canada Day Jars
If you’ve been with us for a while you’ll know that upcycling mason jars is one of our favourite ways to craft. Did you know that Bernardin has been Canada’s leader in home canning products for 140 years?
For us, finding the Bernardin logo on decades old jars in our mom’s pantry (she reuses them every year for her canning) is a treat. Not only do we know that they’ll be filled with delicous preserves each fall (canned peaches anyone?), but we also have an endless supply of mason jars to craft with!
After making these super-cute, oh-so Canadian painted rocks last year, we’ve been wanting to do the same artwork on a set of mason jars. We’ve styled them as cutlery holders for an outdoor BBQ or picnic but they could also be filled with fresh flowers for a pretty centerpiece. Or even just leave them empty for a simple red and white touch to your tablescape!
We used a white paint pen for the intricate fireworks pattern on the red jar and aside from that, we used red and white chalky paint which give them a classic, matte finish. This would be a great mason jar craft to make and sell at craft fairs, bazaars or fundraisers!

- Set of 3 Bernardin glasss jars, 250ml decorative with lids
- Chalky paint in red and white (we used Americana Decor Chalky Finish in Romance and Everlasting)
- Paintbrush, medium flat and fine tip
- White paint pen
- Maple Leaf printout size 3” high
- Pencil
Jar Painting for Canada Day
Thoroughly wash the Bernardin jars with soap and hot water and let them dry completely before using. Additionally, use rubbing alcohol and a clean paper towel to wipe away any prints or smudges.
Using a medium sized paintbrush, apply chalky paint in red over the surface of one jar. Paint the other two jars in white chalky paint.
Allow paint to fully dry before applying a second coat of paint and before moving on to the next steps.
On the red jar, use the white paint pen to draw a small maple leaf in the center. Add swirls and polk-a-dots around the leaf to resemble fireworks. Repeat with the same design around the jar.
On one white jar, paint to wide horizontal stripes around the jar at the top and bottom in red chalky paint.
On the second white jar, place the maple leaf cutout on to the jar and trace the outline in pencil. Using a fine tip paintbrush, paint the maple leaf in red chalky paint.
Allow paint to dry fully and then remove sealing discs before reattaching the snap lids to all painted jars.
Fill the jars with paper straws and reusable cutlery for a Canada Day picnic.

Mason Jar Painting for Canada Day
Materials
- 250 ml Set of 3 decorative Bernardin glass jars with lids
- Chalky paint in red and white we used Americana Decor Chalky Finish in Romance and Everlasting
- Paintbrush medium flat and fine tip
- White paint pen
- Maple Leaf printout size 3” high
- Pencil
Instructions
