Make a DIY Bookmark with Liquid Polymer Clay

Liquid polymer clay is an unexpectedly cool way to make a DIY bookmark! Create swirls of color and top them with a fun tassel or pompom for a very custom bookmark creation.

Be warned: this is one of those addictive DIYs that will have you wanting to make more DIY bookmarks than you know what to do with! Lucky for you, I’ve got ideas.

What is Liquid Polymer Clay?

One of the coolest craft supplies ever, that’s what!

Liquid Sculpey is a super-versatile liquid polymer clay material that comes as a thick liquid but becomes strong and flexible after you bake it. It’s perfect for silicone molds, jewelry making, transfers, window clings, and more.

I love that you can also include fun add-ins like glitter, dried flowers, alcohol ink, and more.

Ideas For your DIY Bookmarks

If I’m being honest, I know that my son will probably steal every single one of the six bookmarks I made. That kid reads like a fiend!

But if you don’t have a voracious reader in your household, there are so many other ideas for your DIY bookmarks!

These would make amazing teacher or paraprofessional gifts around holiday time, and they’re so easy to make in big batches! You could also make them for neighbors, friends, grandma and grandpa, babysitters, and more.

They’d also be perfect to make and sell in a craft market or in an online shop.

Supplies You’ll Need

The great thing about the supplies for your DIY bookmarks is that they’ll last a long time!

Eventually you may run out of Liquid Sculpey, but the mixing set and molds can be used over and over to create projects for years to come.

Materials

• Liquid Sculpey. If you decide to mix colors and pour them together like we did here, be sure you choose colors that complement each other or are in the same family. They have the potential to mix a bit, so this will help avoiding your colors turning brown or gray when they mix.
• Silicone Mixing Set. This set is majorly useful! The silicone cup wipes clean, or peels clean after you bake it. The little mixing stick is perfect for gently moving liquid clay around, or for scooping add-ins like glitter into your clay. And it has a lid to store excess liquid inside!
• Silicone Bookmark Molds. These come in an array of sizes and shapes, so do a quick online search to find the ones that work best for you.
• Tassels or Pom Poms. These are optional but I think they add such a fun touch! You can purchase these online, or find our tutorials for making tassels here and pom poms here.
• Scissors
• Glue Gun
• Baking Tray

How to Make DIY Bookmarks with Liquid Polymer clay

1. Start by uncapping your selected colors of Liquid Sculpey. Use the flat end of the stir stick to stir the contents of each bottle (cleaning the stir stick between colors).
2. Place your molds onto a baking sheet.
3. Pour some of each color into the mixing cup, depending on how many bookmarks you’ll be making. I find that it’s better to underestimate and refill as needed, rather than pouring too much and unnecessarily mixing your colors.
4. Slowly and gently pour the mixture into your mold.
5. Gently tap the baking sheet on your table surface to bring any bubbles to the surface and spread the clay. You can pop any bubbles with the pointed end of the stir stick.
6. If needed, use the stir stick to help spread the clay evenly around the mold. You can also use the pointed end to drag gently through your colors and create pretty swirls.
7. Heat your oven to 275 F and bake for 15 minutes.
8. Remove from the oven and allow the bookmarks to cool. Once cool, peel them out of the molds. Use a pair of scissors to gently trim any rough edges.
9. Thread a piece of embroidery thread through the hole in a bookmark. Hot glue the ends to a tassel or pom pom.
