Make a Wall Hanging Seashell Craft
This lovely wall hanging is a perfect way to use the seashells you’ve collected over the years! It’s a simple seashell craft that you can create on your own or with your kiddos.
One of my favorite things to do on the beach, whether I’m alone or with kids, is to wander up and down the shore collecting treasures.
I have a whole collection of shells and trinkets. Some are displayed in bowls and jars, but lots of the ones that I’ve collected with the kids are just waiting in plastic baggies for something exciting to happen.
We wanted to dream up a way to display some of the shells and sea glass that the kids have collected, so we created this pretty seashell craft!

You might remember the massive amount of sea glass and sand dollars that we collected a few years back! Our first seashell craft actually featured sea glass and it was so lovely.
You can see our sea glass resin coasters here. They’re easy to make and a great way to use small things like tiny shells, bits of coral, or broken pieces.
Where to Collect Seashells
We get asked all the time if the sand dollars we have are real, and if we found them ourselves. And the answer is yes!
If you are in California, head to Morro Bay and walk Morro Beach during sand dollar season. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen! Literally hundreds of sand dollars wash up on the beach.
If you go, make sure you educate yourself ahead of time about which ones are okay to take and which ones may still be alive. Here are some tips.
But no matter which beach you’re on, you can find some natural treasures!
I recommend going early in the day or morning before the beach gets busy and the prettiest shells get snapped up. Walk down where the water meets the shore to find the shells that get washed up.
How to Clean and Prep Shells for this craft
There are some super easy way to clean and prep your seashells for this craft!
If your shells are fairly clean and don’t have a fishy or beachy odor, you can simply soak them in some fresh soapy water for about an hour. If they have any sand or sediment on them you can brush gently with a soft toothbrush.
After the hour, rinse the shells off with clean water until it runs clear.
After the rinse, I like to leave the clean shells out to dry in the sun. This also sometimes has a bleaching effect that will lighten or brighten the shells a bit.

Supplies You’ll Need
For this project, you just need a few materials.
- Wooden dowel or a thin piece of driftwood
- Seashells
- Cotton cord
- Glue gun
How to Make a Wall Hanging Seashell Craft
- Start by tying a few lengths of cotton cord onto your wooden dowel. The pieces shown in our seashell craft are about 14″ long. Tie them with a double knot and trim the excess near the knot.
- Next, choose your seashells. It’s best if each shell has a corresponding shell of approximately the same size.
- Lay your first shell face down. Place a line of hot glue on the back of the shell. Lay a piece of the cotton cord over the glue, then place the corresponding shell on top of the cord facing up, so that the cord is sandwiched between the two shells.
- Press the two shells gently together to ensure that the glue is holding them both.
- Continue in the same manner until all of the cords have your desired amount of shells or sea glass on them.
- Cut another length of cotton cord. Tie one end to one end of the wooden dowel with a double knot. Tie the other end of the cord to the other end of the dowel. Trim any excess cord.
