Tips and Tricks:

  • For single colored flowers, I like to add my color pigment towards to center of the flower at the base of each petal shape. Then I add a drop of water towards the tip of each petal. This water pushes the pigment towards the center and makes the tips lighter. Give this technique a try and let me know what you think!
  • Let the water do the work. This is something I truly believe in. If I try to move the color around and fuss with it – the flower just turns out worse never better. The less you fuss with the watercolored flowers, the better. Simply add paint in the flower shape, drop in a few extra drops of water and let it dry. If you are still unhappy with the look, try adding another layer of color after layer one has dried.
  • Always leave a tiny hair line gap between petals. Or paint alternate petals and let dry. Then come back and paint between the dried petals.
  • Always add leaves. For as many flowers you paint try and bring in that much green into the floral composition.
  • Green is just not green. If you are painting many different colored flowers, remember to vary the greens by adding some blue, green or white.

Notes:

The Watercolor set I use in the video is the Gansai Tambi set. I LOVE this one because the paints are rich and have NO chalky finish to them. The colors are really intense though, so I use the lining insert as my palette to dilute the paint a bit. The paint dries on that liner and I just reuse it the next time.
