ATMYSPHERE – DOMOTEX 2020

The lead theme of this year’s DOMOTEX 2019 is ATMYSPHERE.

To truly enhance human well-being, building design needs to focus on parametres as flooring to enhance health-supporting human behaviors.

ATMYSPHERE examines 6 different properties of the floor.

I’ll be covering the Green Living Theme and I’ve selected 5 different pictures for my mood board which can be seen at the special “Framing Trends” showcase in Hall 8.

Green Living – what does that mean? From my perspective, it means doing things in a way that minimizes adverse effects on our environment.

The quintessential question we’re all asking our selves right now is what can we do to make this World better/ more green?

Let’s run through my different aspects of the topic Green Living and how we can choose mindful.

Green Living Mood Board

Hardwood Floor with a Story

The proximity to nature is reflected in the use of natural materials, wooden furniture and hardwood flooring.

Due to its undeniable advantages, the hardwood flooring has gained worldwide recognition and 2020 will also be “all about going green” and bringing the majesty of the forest inside.

Hardwood accentuates the beauty of your house, adding a warm, natural feel to rooms from the bedroom to the kitchen.

Consumers are more than ever investing their focus in hardwood floors that comes from sustainably managed forests FSC-certified. Look for companies who invest in sustainable production and guarantee a controlled and certified supply chain.

Looking for materials with a story, not any story, but the “right” story. This scheme helps us to find stability to feel well with and within ourselves.

Botanical Influences

The carpet was literally everywhere during Milan Design Week in 2018 and 2019. You could spot, obviously, on the floor, but moreover, on the walls and on the ceiling.

There’s been a strong Japanese design element running as an undercurrent through interior collections over the past few seasons.

Next year it’s really coming into its own as a stand out trend. Several big retailers have presented us with collections bursting with rich silk textures, graceful flower motifs and stylized oriental prints.

A mash-up of elegant Japanese minimalism and rustic Scandinavian simplicity.

Japandi is a hybrid trend bringing together the best of these two much-loved styles. This trend is the one for you if your home is your sanctuary.

Strong Japandi design elements/botanical influences makes us connect with nature. Look forward to see more collections bursting with rich silk textures, graceful flower motifs, stylized oriental prints.

Fauna

One of the home decor trends that was evident throughout the homewares brands this year was animal themed home accessories.

We see more and more designers embracing the fauna world. There’s a focus on ecological restoration.

Rug and carpets with distinct and almost unforgotten floral and fauna patterns, merged with the decorative details of lush materials, characterize this trend.

Nature inspired colours will overall this theme by giving a particular intensity through gem inspired tones, forest greens, rich navies, winter wines, and nocturne blacks.

With this trend we can bring the botanical exterior to the hospitality interior, making them a unique place. You can see on the picture above, that an exotic look can make the space more alive and the combination between patterns and textures can be endless.

The fauna trend bring quirkiness & happiness to the table – and happiness never goes out of style.

When talking about rugs I’d like to highlight that more and more rug companies carries The Goodweave Label. GoodWeave is a global, not-for-profit organisation which is responsible for operating the GoodWeave certification programme internationally.

Again we’re not only buying a product today, but a story and we want to know how and under what conditions products are made, along with where they’re made.

Biomaterials

Biomaterials, such as manure, hemp, vegetables, fungus, plants, are also being repurposed and turned into beautiful and biodegradable design.

One of the sustainable floor solutions that I will highlight is linoleum floor coverings.

We see more and more linoleum and most of these natural floors are associated with sustainability, durability, high quality and innovative design.

Forbo Linoleum is made from natural raw materials and is the most sustainable flooring choice. The Forbo Marmoleum product range is a CO2 neutral resilient floor covering, measured from cradle to gate.

The key raw materials used in the linoleum production include linseed oil, which comes from the flax plant seeds, wood flour as production waste from controlled forestry plantations and jute, a crop whose fibers provide the material for the membrane onto which the linoleum is calendared.

Sustainability

Epoxy flooring - sustainable

The engineered environment trend is all about mixing two conflicting elements: technology and nature. Science and technology are used to create sustainable pieces that are as beautiful as they are good for the environment.

It’s taking recyclables (used plastic, old wood, etc.) and giving them a new life in the consumer’s home.

Since sustainable should not and will not go out of style, we’re pretty certain that scientists and interior designers will continue to team up to make beautiful home decor that Mother Nature can appreciate.

Taking about green living you usually don’t think of epoxy floor coverings – but epoxy floors now comes in environmentally friendly solutions for every facility.

Some are made from recycled glass bottles, recycled copper and recycled porcelain.

That means when you install an eco-friendly floor (made from reused material) in your facility you are doing your part to keep glass bottles and old bathroom fixtures and other items out of our landfills, as well as keep from using up natural resources.

Biophilic design

I know you’ve might already heard about the Biophilia trend (love of nature) will just grow stronger and stronger.

The positive benefits of biophilic design and its approach to our health and overall productivity are well documented and backed by science and it’s all about weaving our ecosystem into our surroundings.

Biophilia is a design driver that engages the end user by connecting them to primal instincts about the relationship between humans and nature.

2020 is all about getting back and giving back to nature.

When done properly, we are calmed by the sight of greenery in the form of live plants and living walls, the sight, and sound of water, access to views of natural settings, and tactile organic materials such as wood and stone.”

In today’s technology-fueled world, we will increasingly crave a connection back to human-centric and natural elements.

In 2020 we continue to witness the biophilic interior design trend becoming more and more of a necessity in the building of interior spaces, with both residential and corporate design moving towards introducing natural light, greenery, water features, natural materials such as wood and stone, and open spaces for quiet working.

The interior design world is dynamic and forever evolving – and whilst trends can be a big thing for a pretty short season, some stay with us for years and continue to surprise and delight.

In 2020, wellness focused interior designs will continue to take centre stage and offer new ways to update and transform our indoor environment. From the use of sustainable materials to incorporating colours that encourage us to relax.

All upcoming wellness trends realise that good design can greatly influence our physical and mental well-being.

The megatrend Green Living which connects disparate worlds between a variety of cultures, the traditional manufacturing techniques and smart flooring technology will make us able to adapt to a more sustainable, well and better lifestyle.
