Star Crossed Quilt Block Pattern

The Star Crossed Quilt block pattern is block seven of the Riley Blake Designs Quilt block challenge. It is a free pattern for a star quilt block, incorporating a Granny Square block into the center.

Welcome to Block 7 of the Riley Blake 2024 Quilt Block Challenge! If you’re new here and not sure what the quilt block challenge is, be sure to check out this post with all of the details about the 2024 challenge.

As a reminder, I’ll share one 10″ block pattern a week through June, except the last week of the month, which is catch-up week!

Heather Peterson of Anka’s Treasures designed this week’s quilt block.

The block is really fun in that it’s a cross between a Sawtooth Star and a Granny Square quilt block.

Fabric Used

I’m sewing my quilt from Tulip Cottage fabrics now in stores. I spotted them in the following shops!

If your shop has it in stock, comment, and I will gladly add you to this list.

Block Piecing Tips

I’m going to share a few quick piecing tips with you about this block.

One: If you want to fussy cut the center of the block, make sure you cut your fabric square at a 45-degree angle to the design. At first, I cut my house block out traditionally, but then I realized as I was sewing that the house would then be on its side in the finished block. So I recut it.

Two: The center of this block needs to be trimmed. DO NOT skip this step. I trimmed almost a 1/4″ off each side of my block.

I have a 5 1/2″ ruler, so I just used it and lined up the sides of the block on the 5″ mark on both sides to square up the block. I ensured that the unit’s center was right on the 2 1/2″ mark on the ruler so that it stayed centered.

I love how my quilt is coming together! I’m glad I used more Navy in this block, as it’s really helping to tie the blocks together!
