Treehouse Living Room Tour

A 90’s lakehome gets a breath of fresh air! Come see how the home’s natural landscape served as inspiration for this treehouse living room.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve shared an update on the Treehouse living room, but that’s not to say we haven’t been hard at work. I’m SO excited to show you the loveliness that’s ensued since we’ve last talked!

And if you’re sitting there thinking…what the heck is ‘the treehouse’? Then hop over to read “Meet the Treehouse” for the full background scoop!

So the Treehouse is my parents full-time residence that our family uses as a cabin as it’s located on a beautiful, quiet lake North of Minneapolis. It’s built on a hill, so the back of the house opens onto 3 different decks surrounded by woods and you feel like you’re up in the trees, hence the name, treehouse!

The goal in the living room here was to make this new-to-them place feel more like my parent’s style: lake-inspired, cozy and casual. As you may remember, there were 4 different paint colors happening in this one area alone, each it’s own personal shade of khaki, grey or tan, and there was SO much going on in this one room: angled walls, half walls, varying ceiling heights, glimpses into other rooms… So much so that the eye had nowhere to land.

We unified the room with one paint color (B. Moore, Balboa Mist) moving away from reds/browns/khaki towards lake-inspired blues/greens, and reworked the furniture layout to encourage a ‘conversation area.’ We shifted the tv/media console to the wall adjacent to the fireplace and added 8″ shiplap to the fireplace and tv walls. Grouping the fireplace and media console together + shiplapping the two walls helped create a clear, unified focal point.

My mom stripped the honey oak fireplace mantel and stair railing down to the natural wood and sealed it with a water-based clear poly-urethane. The natural oak turned out gorgeous!

We pulled mainly from Mid-Century and Nordic influences, and layered in some eclectic antique elements for depth and nuance. The blue vintage-Persian-style rug, that poetically references water, was this lakehome living room’s color palette jumping off point.

Furniture-wise, we chose to stay neutral with the larger pieces. Since this is the main hang-out space, a sectional was perfect in accommodating lots of space for snuggles + ample cushions for fort-building. lol.

We wanted the room to feel thoughtful and comfortable with rustic lakehome-esque elements mixed in too. My dad’s antique snow shoes, he bought nearly 40 years ago in Northern Minnesota, were the perfect ‘art’ to hang above the sofa, and I suspect we’ll switch them out for paddles come summer. The mini antler adds just the right amount of quirk above the tv.

So that’s the skinny on the Treehouse Living Room, you guys! At some point down the road (when we re-do the kitchen), we’ll replace all the wood flooring on this level, swap the wood stair railing for something more modern and re-tile the fireplace surround, but for now we’re riding the high from our work so far!

Well this is just wonderful! It looks eminently livable, which I don’t always feel to be true for beautiful rooms.
