Tulip Cottage Gathered Precuts Free Quilt Pattern

Create a beautiful quilt perfect for Spring with our free easy to easy-to-follow Gathered Precuts Quilt Pattern.

Pink, green and blue quilt made using rectangles of fabric.

Some of you may remember last fall when I shared a free pattern on the site called Gathered Pre-Cuts. The quilt pattern was designed to use a 10-inch pre-cut stack of fabric, sometimes called a layer cake and a fabric panel.

I made my quilt with fabric from my Spooky Schoolhouse Halloween fabric collection. This month, I am releasing a new fabric line with Riley Blake Designs called Tulip Cottage.

One of the projects that I have designed to complement the line is a bright, sunny version of the Gathered Precuts quilt with Tulip Cottage fabrics, which is perfect for Spring!

The directions and dimensions for this quilt are the same as those in the example made using the Spooky Schoolhouse fabric. however, I was able to use some of the smaller pieces from the Tulip Cottage fabric panel on this quilt, whereas I was not able to use the full panel from the Halloween version (due to the size of the smaller panel pieces)

About the Fabric Used in the Quilt; Tulip Cottage Collection

I want to give you exact cutting directions if you create this quilt using the Tulip, Cottage Layer Cake, and fabric panel.

As mentioned, my Tulip Cottage fabric collection with Riley Blake is in stores now! It started popping up in shops just this week!

Next week, I’m planning a full blog post with information about the line, my inspiration, and a few projects created with it. In over 12 years of blogging, I’ve learned to only talk about one thing at a time in a blog post! This post is just about this quilt! This is the first of several projects you will see on the site this spring using this fabric line.

I plan on making everything from Easter baskets to quilted pillows, tote bags, table runners, and more. You can ask for tulip cottage fabric at your local quilt shop. I’ve also linked a few shops that have it in stock now.

Where to Buy Tulip Cottage Fabric

If your shop has it in stock, leave a comment, and I will gladly add you to this list.

About the Quilt

  • Approximate Size: 54″ x 62″
  • Supplies: One 10″ Precut Stack of Tulip Cottage Fabric. One Fabric Panel from the Tulip Cottage Line.
  • Binding: 1/2 Yard
  • Skill Level: Beginner to Confident Beginner

Quilt Piecing Tip

This quilt is constructed by columns. You sew all the pieces in column one to each other, then sew the construed columns together.

As you sew your columns together, your fabrics may shift slightly (especially if your seam allowances aren’t quite a perfect 1/4″).

I recommend nesting them as you sew the columns together to get sharp corners on your seams. For example, press all of the seams in column one up and all of the seams in column two down. Then, “nest” the seams with each other when the columns are stitched together.

This quilt pattern offers you a unique way to use the Tulip Cottage fabric quilt panel (sometimes called a cheater panel) and a 10" precut stack of fabric. It's fast to sew and is a great quilt for beginners.

Instructions

Pattern Notes

  • Quilt Size: 54” x 62”

Step One: Cut Up the Panel & Sort the Fabrics

  • Decide which portions of your quilt panel you want to use for the quilt top. The large squares are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2”, and the smaller rectangles are 5” x 9 ½”.
  • Sort your precut stack into piles.
In one pile, place the prints you’d like to use for the larger squares (you'll need 8 larger squares), and in another pile, the ones you will cut into rectangles (you'll need 31 precut squares).
  • From the stack of precut pieces cut:
62 pieces 5” x 9 ½” (note: if you are cutting all of these from precuts, you’ll need 31 precuts).
    8 pieces 9 ½” x 9 ½”
    From the fabric panel cut:
4 pieces 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" (these are cut from the Flower Girl, All the Things, Oh Hello & Flower Market portions of the panel)
4 pieces 5" x 9 1/2" (these are cut from the smaller rectangles on the panel).

Step Two: Sew

  • This quilt is constructed by columns. Each column contains eleven 5” x 9 ½” pieces and two 9 ½” x 9 ½” pieces.
  • Refer to the layout diagram for the exact placement of pieces in each column. The gray squares on the diagram represent the 9 1/2" squares of fabric.

  • Some precut stacks contain many of identical prints or use the same colors repeatedly, while others have a wider variety.
For this reason, I recommend laying out your pieces on a design wall or the floor before sewing to ensure a balanced placement of print and color in your final quilt designs.
  • Sew the pieces in column one together. Repeated by columns 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6.
  • After you have the pieces sewn together, press your seams.
  • Sew the columns to each other.

Notes

TIP:
Take the time at the beginning to sort and plan out your quilt. If you are using a panel, I recommend that you plan around the panel.  After you know how many 9 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ and 5″ x 9 1/2″ pieces you can cut from your panel, you will know how many pieces of your precut pack you need to use.

Fabric Panel Details

The fabric panel for the Tulip Cottage line is made using a soft canvas fabric that Riley Blake calls Home Dec. It’s like thick textured cotton and is wonderful for creating tote bags.

The 10″ precut stack fabric is a more traditional quilting cotton. I think the textures of the two fabrics complement each other nicely, and I do not think having two different fabric types in one quilt is an issue. I think it adds texture and interest to the finished quilt.
