Supplies to make giant carrot
I grabbed all my supplies from Hobby Lobby. Their Easter section was 40% off so I grabbed a few different ribbons and signs to play around with!
- smooth Fom Foam sheets (I bought two but you could use only one if you don’t want it as thick or as big)
- foam cutter (I found this right by the foam sheets at Hobby Lobby)
- Orange paint
- Easter signs (I bought 4 different ones because I couldn’t decide!)
- Easter ribbon
- Elmer’s glue
- zip tie
How to make the Easter craft: giant carrot
I started by gluing the foam sheets together with Elmer’s glue. I used quite a bit and spread it around on the sheet like I was frosting a cupcake. Placing some books on top for a few hours made sure it really stuck together.
Once my sheets and glue were dry, I sketched out my design directly on the foam with a pencil.
Cutting out the giant carrot
I did my stem two foam sheets thick and the carrot 4 foam sheets thick. It was purely by accident but I like the dimension it gives.
The foam cutter is a pretty fun tool. When you plug it in, it heats up. It just cuts through the foam like butter! You can use a sharp knife if you don’t have the tool.
I kept trimming away pieces and curving the edges until I had a shape that I really liked. There is no wrong or right here! You can make your carrot short and stubby or long and skinny! At one point I thought my carrot looked more like an ironing board so I just kept trimming!
I took sandpaper and smoothed out the edges once I had the basic shape.
This part is messy but totally worth the mess. It makes it look so much smoother and it helped the pieces of styrofoam look more like one big piece instead of 4 separate pieces.
Painting the carrot
This foam is so great because it’s not as porous as some of the other kinds. It holds paint really well. I only need 2 coats and then I went over the indents and edges with a darker color to add more dimensions.
Embellish your easter craft
After the paint is all dry- It’s time to embellish!
Hobby Lobby had so many ribbons and fabrics- I played around with them trying to figure out my favorite layout! Black and white, orange, green, checkered, burlap! They were all so cute! I just tied it around the stem.
You could use this big carrot as a photo prop or on your mantel- but I wanted to hang mine on the front door. I slipped the zip tie through the back of the ribbon to make a loop to attach to the hook on my door.
REMEMBER! This is a judgment-free zone! The backs of my projects always look like an unfinished mess! You could paint both sides and make it look great from all angles but I knew it would be flat on a door and not seen so I skipped the back!
You can add a cute Easter sign to the front of the carrot!
I also thought this carrot would be darling stuck in a planter! You could make some medium-sized ones and put them all around the planters in your yard!
I loved how my giant carrot came out! It’s so fun and you can see it hanging on my door from the street! I hope you are inspired to create this cute easter craft! You can take this basic idea and get creative! Cut out a big bunny or an easter egg!
